Spooky Halloween Party Tips

Honestly, I have never decorated my house much for Halloween. Don't get me wrong, I have always had a jack-o'-lantern on the front steps and maybe a few fake spider webs around the door, but I have never been into gory, graphic Halloween decorations. This year my daughter has motivated me to get into the spirit and host a small Halloween dinner party. While searching the web for spooky decorations and party ideas I became inspired by all of the creative people out there that can make Halloween eerie and mysterious without being overtly gory.

One of my favorite finds is definitely Love Manor's potion jar labels. I have decided to use these authentic looking labels on jars filled with colored liquids or oils and place them on my bookshelf. I also thought that these labels would look cute on a small glass jars filled with candy and used as a party favor.

To set the tone of the party, I plan to use Martha Stewart's template for mice silhouettes in the entry way. These creepy mice will definitely scare my guests when they walk up the stairs. Regarding the menu for my party, I plan to start off with creepy cocktails. To make these drinks, first rub the rim of the glass with lemon or lime juice, then dip the glass into black decorating sugar and finally add a black gummy spider. You can find the gummy spiders at Candy Warehouse.

For dessert, I plan to skip the tricks and give my guests a sweet treat. I absolutely LOVE the desserts from Fairytale Brownies. Their brownies are moist, chocolaty and delicious!! I am so excited for my guests to try them. As far as a the main entree, I am still trying to come up with a creative dish. I am playing around with the idea of vampire steaks (filets) with a red wine sauce. I am so glad that my daughter talked me into throwing a Halloween party because I have had so much fun planning it!

I have a confession to make. I like to keep everything in my house fairly organized. In fact, some might say I am a bit anal about clutter. That's why it kills me every time I walk into the kitchen and see a big pile of unorganized recipes. For some reason I feel the need to scribble down recipes on little pieces of scrap paper and throw them into a pile. But today everything is going to change! I was so excited to see free printable recipes cards on Skip To My Lou this morning that I ran out and bought a pack of cardstock so I could get started right away. What I love about this recipe card maker is that you get to customize the appearance of the cards and enter the recipe on the computer so all you have to do is print them out and marvel at your work. This Saturday I will be cutting out 23 pink butterflies. Why you ask? Valentine's Day of course! I found this cute, easy butterfly Valentines card for my daughter to hand out to her classmates. We plan to write her name on one side of the wings and the recipients name on the other. Today I discovered the coolest thing... cupcake bouquets! These cute edible bouquets would be perfect for a baby shower or bridal shower centerpiece. First, find a Styrofoam ball that fits your flower pot and decorate the pot with ribbons, bows, tulle or any accessory that would be appropriate. Then, frost your cupcakes to resemble flowers (the top half of an oreo or cookie crumbs can be used for the sunflower center). I'm back from Cape Cod and my husband and I had a wonderful time celebrating our anniversary. Since neither of us have ever been to the Cape Cod area before, we had a fabulous time exploring all of the towns on the Cape. We learned that each one had a very different personality and all of the towns had a wonderful quaint charm about them. Refreshing Cucumber Salad

One of my favorite side dishes on a hot summer day is cucumber salad. I have fond memories of my grandma preparing a traditional vinegar based cucumber salad with vegetables fresh from the garden. I recently found an excellent recipe from Better Homes and Gardens and had to share it. One of the things that I love about this recipe is the ginger flavor. In my opinion, this recipe is perfect for a backyard BBQ!

Fickle Feet

This summer I have been living in my SwitchFlops. These flip flops have interchangeable decorative straps which give you the opportunity to create numerous looks from just one pair of shoes. Attached with Velcro, the straps are really easy to change and the Velcro is super strong so the straps stay on no matter how active you are.

I think that these flip flops are perfect to take on vacations. With only one pair of shoes, you can go from a casual look to a more dressy look just by changing the strap. Also, SwitchFlops come in a couple different heel heights so it’s easy to find the perfect shoe for every occasion. My next purchase is going to the cute kitten heel flip flops, called the Lily. I am dreading when winter comes and I have to stop wearing my SwitchFlops.

It's That Time of Year Again

Hope everyone had a great 4th of July! Can you believe that it's already time to think about school supplies? Where has the summer gone? Cute Clips & More now offers two different kinds of lunch boxes- a trendy personalized metal lunchbox and an insulated, monogrammed lunch bag.

The personalized metal lunch box is perfect for school lunches or for storing crafts and toys that have a million little pieces. I have had customers order these lunchboxes specifically for storing Lego's and matchbox cars. The inside of the lunch box has a dry erase sheet attached to it and is perfect for adding a special note. Wouldn’t this be a great idea on exam days or birthdays? As always, if you don't see a specific design that reflects your little one's personal style, please contact us and we can create a custom design for you.

Our insulated, monogrammed lunch bag measures 5.5” x 5.5” x 6” and easily fits a sandwich, juice box and fruit cup. I think they are the perfect size because they are small enough to fit in a backpack, but large enough to hold a hearty lunch.

Soapsicle Tutorial- Good Clean Fun!

Today my daughter and I made soapsicles! They were so easy to make and I loved seeing her expressive her creativity by layering different colors. I thought these would be an adorable summer party favor if you wrapped them in plastic and tied a ribbon at the base. These soapsicles look good enough to eat, so warn little ones that they don't taste as good as they look!

Supplies
Popsicle mold
Craft sticks
Pour and melt soap base
Soap coloring
Rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle
4-cup glass measuring cup
Fragrance (optional)

1) To begin, I purchased a cheap popsicle mold from the dollar store and the rest of the supplies I was able to find at a local craft store.

2)Melt the pour-and-melt soap base in the measuring cup following the manufactures instructions. When the soap base comes out of the microwave it will be hot so make sure younger kids don't burn themselves. Next, add a few drops of the soap coloring and stir. Just like food coloring, the more you add the darker the color will become. You can also add a few drops of fragrance, if desired, at this time.

3) To make a single color soapsicles, pour the melted soap base into the popsicle mold and spray the surface with a little rubbing alcohol. This will eliminate any air bubbles that might have formed while pouring it into the mold. After about 10 seconds, add the craft stick and put the popsical mold into the freezer for a couple of minutes until it sets. FYI, I decided to go with jumbo craft sticks instead of skinny popsicle sticks because they were easier for little hands to grab onto.

4) If you want to achieve the layered look, start by pouring the first color about a third of the way up and spray it with rubbing alcohol. Not only will the rubbing alcohol get rid of any surface bubbles, it will also help the second layer adhere to the first layer. Wait until a skin forms on the first layer and then add your next color and the craft stick. Remember, to add a spritz of rubbing alcohol between all of your layers. Finally add the third layer.

5) To remove the soap, pop it in the freezer for a few minutes, then run a butter knife between the soap and the mold. Gently pull on the craft stick and pull the soapsicle out.

Gearing up for July 4th

While trying to plan my menu for our 4th of July barbecue (I hope the weather holds up!), I remembered one of my favorite appetizers from Smitten Kitchen, Feta Salsa. If you are not familiar with Smitten Kitchen run and check out her amazing blog! This Mediterranean inspired appetizer includes some of my favorite flavors like Kalamata olives and feta cheese. Plus, this recipe is very adaptable. Last time I made it I didn't have scallions on hand, so I used capers and it still turned out wonderful. Serve it with pita chip, sliced baguette, flat bread or whatever you have handy. Yum!
